The Miami and Erie Canal, built in the 1830s, connected Dayton commerce to Lake Erie via the Miami River and served as a principal route until the 1850s. Boats were towed along the canal using donkeys or horses walking on a prepared towpath along the bank, at a rate of about four to five miles per hour.
