Dayton was advertised as "The Gem City, the Cleanest City in America" in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The phrase was plastered on public trash cans and other places throughout downtown during this era. Yet another nickname attributed to the metropolis is "Dragon City,” referring to the popular minor league baseball team for which Dayton has become famous.
